Aims and Scope
In the age of globalisation, we witness massive shifts in economic and political heartlands of our world. Economic growth and welfare used to be a privilege of only a small part of the world population, while nowadays we observe a significant improvement of levels of wellbeing (in terms of income, education, human health) in many countries and regions of the world. Clearly, in some cases spatial-economic disparities are still alarmingly high. Another new megatrend is the drastic enhancement of quality-of-life conditions in many countries (thanks to environmental and resource technology, shifts in human behavioural patterns, and strict enforcement of environmental rules), although in several countries and regions (in particular, large metropolitan areas) quality-of-life conditions are still at a sub-standard (and even life-threatening) level.
The Asia-Pacific Rim has exhibited a surprising growth pattern over the past decades, but the shadow side has been a rapid environmental decay (air, water and soil quality) and rise of socio-economic disparities. This development poses a new dilemma and forces the research and policy community to avoid a ‘New Asian Drama’ and to seek for new ways to cope with these serious and unprecedented challenges.
The international conference on ‘Sustainable Urban and Regional Development – Research and Policy Challenges for the Asia-Pacific Rim’ seeks to bring together scholars from various countries in the world to share their expertise, to propose new ideas and to present original research findings on the above theme. This theme comprises various topics, such as (but not limited to):
• Urban growth and environmental quality
• Mass-motorized mobility and sustainability
• Intelligent management of sustainable metropolitan areas
• Climate change and threats to sustainability
• Population dynamics, growth and urbanisation
• Rural areas in isolation and poverty
• Innovation, education and learning as policy tools
• Modern technology and spatial dynamics
• Entrepreneurship as new roads
• Infrastructure and sustainable spatial development
• New analysis tools for sustainable urban management
• Tourism-led regional growth
• The role of agriculture in lagging areas
• Urban-rural dichotomy
• Migration-led economic development
